Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. Here’s the first two pages for a comic pitch my old friend Rick Flom and I are putting together. I’ve finished the first five pages for the pitch, and we’re getting the rest of it together to start sending to publishers. Fingers crossed that there will be more news about this down the line. It’s been a lot of fun working from Rick’s script, and also very humbling. I don’t know how comic artists are able to maintain such high quality with high output. My hat’s off to everyone making comics.
I painted a poster for THE SPINE OF NIGHT, which is out in theaters and VOD now. To find out where to watch, check here.
I was nominated a few months ago for the World Fantasy Award for Best Artist (deservingly won by Rovina Cai), and NORSE TALES has been nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal. The full list of nominees can be seen here. Some of the original art from NORSE TALES is currently part of an exhibition at the Museum of Dutch Literature/Children’s Book Museum until February 6, 2022. Some of the art from the first book, NORSE MYTHS, is part of an exhibit at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath starting Nov. 27. More info on that exhibition here.
The USA release of NORSE TALES keeps getting pushed back (Dec. 7 now), but here are some nice advance reviews:
Equally spare and forceful are the masterful illustrations. . . . each is a tour de force of design and execution. Powerful, moving, relevant.

The author’s storytelling is direct with bold scenes, occasionally sinister twists, and touches of optimism. . . Love’s striking expressionistic illustrations with ominous creatures, rugged terrain, and dark colors set just the right tone for this distinctive collection.
—Booklist (starred review)
Lyrical and haunting. . . The illustrations by Jeffrey Alan Love are stark and dramatic. . . a must-read for fans of fantasy and mythology, especially Viking lore.
—School Library Connection (starred review)
-Speaking of Nick Cave, that new B-Sides & Rareties album is great.
-The new Edwin Austin Abbey book from Flesk Publications is excellent.
-I’m loving the new French-language editions of Enrique Breccia’s work from Editions iLatina.
Until next time, with love,
-j
Oh man the illustration for The Spine of Night poster is so darn amazing; especially with the touch of blue. 🤩 All the best with the comic as well! 👏
